In a bold and unexpected move, two women, Kavita and Gunja, who had connected on Instagram years ago, left their abusive husbands and tied the knot with each other in Deoria. The shocking incident took place on Thursday at the Shiva Temple, where the women performed their own marriage rituals.
According to media reports, Kavita and Gunja, both victims of domestic violence from their alcoholic husbands, had found solace in each other’s stories over time. With a shared understanding of their painful experiences, they decided to escape their abusive marriages and marry each other.
The ceremony was simple but deeply meaningful. The two women purchased garlands and sindoor (vermillion), and with no one else present to perform the rites, they took it upon themselves to complete the traditional marriage rituals. Temple priest Uma Shankar Pandey confirmed that the women performed the rituals, exchanged garlands, and completed the seven pheras, marking the union.
Speaking to reporters later, Kavita and Gunja explained their decision. They shared that after enduring years of abuse, they were determined to escape their toxic marriages. Their connection on Instagram had offered them support, and eventually, it led them to take the courageous step of marrying each other.
In a role reversal of traditional gender norms, Gunja assumed the position of the groom, applying sindoor to Kavita and leading them through the vows.
Their act of defiance against the abuse they suffered has sparked a conversation about love, freedom, and the courage to break free from oppressive circumstances.
