A special court in Gurugram, Haryana, has issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of ABP News anchor Chitra Tripathi and Republic Bharat journalist Sayed Suhail in connection with a 2013 POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) case, as reported by LiveLaw. The order was issued earlier this month after the court canceled their bail and rejected their requests for exemption from personal appearance.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Ashwani Kumar Mehta instructed the concerned Station House Officer (SHO) to execute the arrest warrant by November 30. The court further ordered the SHO to appear in person if the warrant was not executed.
Tripathi’s counsel had requested exemption, citing her travel to cover the Maharashtra elections, while Suhail’s lawyer claimed he was in Kanpur for the UP bypolls. However, the court emphasized the need to expedite the case, noting the significant delay of nine years.
The case stems from a complaint alleging that three news channels—News 24, India News, and News Nation—aired “edited” and “obscene” videos of a child and her family, which were linked to a sexual assault case involving self-styled godman Asaram Bapu. Police had filed a chargesheet against eight journalists, while a closure report was filed for five others, including two directors from India News and News 24.
