Tulsi Gowda, the renowned environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee, passed away on Tuesday evening at her home in Honnali village, Davangere district, Karnataka, after battling age-related health issues. She was 86 years old.
Known as the Encyclopaedia of Plants, Tulsi Gowda gained widespread recognition when she received the Padma Shri award barefoot in 2021 from then-President Ram Nath Kovind.
Born in 1944 in Honnali to Narayana and Neeli, Gowda was a member of the Indigenous Halakki community and developed a deep bond with nature from the age of 12. Named after the sacred Tulasi plant, she dedicated her life to preserving and understanding the flora around her.
Over a span of 60 years, Gowda planted over 30,000 saplings and became a central figure in the forests of Karnataka. Her vast knowledge of plants, trees, and shrubs earned her the title of ‘Vriksha Maata’ (Mother of Trees). In 2020, she was honored with the Padma Shri for her lifelong commitment to environmental conservation.
In 2023, Dharwad Agricultural University conferred her with an honorary doctorate in recognition of her exceptional contributions to nature. She is survived by her son, daughter, and grandchildren.
