Shimla and the upper parts of Himachal Pradesh have been experiencing heavy rain and snowfall for the past 24 hours, causing extensive disruptions and landslides. The incessant downpour has forced the snow in Shimla and adjacent places to melt, lowering temperatures even more and producing an abnormally bone-chilling cold.
The severe weather has made daily life particularly challenging for residents, especially for those who rely on daily wage work. The cold temperatures and incessant rain have made it difficult for laborers to continue their work, disrupting essential services that the community depends on.
The local administration’s preparedness to support the affected workers and residents has come into question. There is an urgent need for action to address the challenges faced by daily laborers, such as providing protective gear and setting up warmth shelters to help them endure the harsh conditions.
In the past 24 hours, Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 1.2°C, while the valleys of Lahaul-Spiti saw temperatures drop to -7.6°C. Other areas like Keylong (-4.3°C), Rekong Peo (-0.7°C), and Hukum Siri (-1.8°C) also experienced freezing temperatures. In Shimla district, Narkanda registered 0.1°C, Kufri 1.4°C, Dalhousie 1.7°C, and Manali 0.2°C. Meanwhile, Kalpa in Kinnaur district saw a minimum temperature of -2.5°C.
According to the Meteorological Department, cold wave conditions are expected to persist across the plains of Himachal Pradesh for the next two days, adding to the difficulties faced by the people in the region. Amidst these extreme conditions, the people of Shimla continue to show resilience as they endure the ongoing weather challenges.
