In a significant development, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) on Tuesday announced a four-year suspension for Olympic bronze medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia after he refused to provide a sample for a dope test during selection trials for the national team on March 10.
This suspension comes after a series of legal and disciplinary actions. NADA had initially suspended Bajrang on April 23, following the incident, which led to the World Wrestling Federation (UWW) also imposing a suspension. However, Bajrang appealed the provisional suspension, and on May 31, NADA’s Anti-Disciplinary Doping Panel (ADDP) revoked it, pending further charges.
On June 23, NADA issued a formal notice to the wrestler, which paved the way for the current four-year ban. The suspension means Bajrang will be barred from returning to competitive wrestling for the duration and may also face challenges if he wishes to pursue coaching opportunities abroad.
NADA explained that the decision was based on the fact that Bajrang was duly approached by the Chaperone/DCO and informed that he was required to provide a urine sample for dope analysis.
Bajrang, who has recently aligned himself with the Congress party and assumed leadership of the All India Kisan Congress alongside fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat, filed a challenge against the charges on July 11. The hearings took place on September 20 and October 4, ultimately leading to the suspension announcement.
This latest suspension marks a dramatic turn in Bajrang’s career, as he now faces significant hurdles in his wrestling and professional aspirations.
