In a landmark announcement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that Dibrugarh will become the state’s second capital in the next three years. The announcement, made on Republic Day, marks a significant step in the state’s development and urbanization efforts.
Sarma shared plans to build a permanent assembly building in Dibrugarh, located on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River in Upper Assam. Starting in 2027, one session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be held in Dibrugarh every year. This move is aimed at decentralizing governance and promoting growth in the region.
In addition to Dibrugarh’s new role, cities like Tezpur and Silchar will also see major development. These cities will play a key role in the state’s future urbanization plans, making them central hubs in Assam’s growing infrastructure.
This decision is seen as part of a broader strategy to enhance the state’s development, spread administrative functions more evenly, and cater to Assam’s diverse population. It’s also viewed as a strategic outreach ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Assam next year.
Did you know that Shillong was once Assam’s capital during British rule? It was only in 1973 that Guwahati, with its vibrant history and location, took over as the state’s capital. Now, Dibrugarh is poised to play a bigger role in the state’s political and administrative future.
Located 478 km east of Guwahati, Dibrugarh is set to transform into a thriving administrative center, with construction already underway to make this ambitious vision a reality within the next three years. The decision signals a bold new chapter in Assam’s history, shaping the state’s growth for years to come.
