In a provocative move on Friday, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi gifted Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi a tote bag with the number “1984” written on it in red, symbolizing the anti-Sikh riots of that year. The numerals appeared to bleed, drawing attention to the tragic event, as Sarangi pointed out that the younger generation should be aware of what the Congress party did in the last 50 years.
This comes amid Priyanka Gandhi’s growing trend of carrying statement bags to Parliament. The trend started when Gandhi was seen with a handbag emblazoned with the word “Palestine” and Palestinian symbols, including a watermelon—a symbol of Palestinian solidarity. The next day, she arrived at Parliament with a new bag displaying “Bangladesh.”
Sarangi’s gesture has sparked fresh political discussions and adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding Priyanka Gandhi’s choice of accessories.
Why 1984 written on the bag?
The numerical written on the bag remembers the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, also known as the 1984 Sikh massacre, a series of organized attacks against Sikhs in India following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Government estimates indicate that around 2,800 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and approximately 3,350 nationwide, though other sources suggest the death toll may have been as high as 8,000 to 17,000.
Indira Gandhi’s assassination occurred after she had ordered Operation Blue Star in June 1984. This military operation aimed to secure the Golden Temple, a prominent Sikh religious site in Amritsar, Punjab, which had become a stronghold for armed Sikh separatists demanding greater autonomy for Punjab. The operation resulted in a violent confrontation that led to numerous casualties, including many pilgrims. The action was widely criticized by Sikhs around the world, who viewed it as an attack on their religion and identity.
