Due to low visibility at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi, five flights scheduled to land in the capital were diverted to Jaipur and Dehradun on Monday. Four of these flights were redirected to Jaipur, while one was sent to Dehradun, as per sources.
The dense smog in Delhi and the surrounding NCR region also caused significant disruptions in railway services. Several Delhi-bound trains were delayed, including Purushottam Express, Shramjeevi Express, Jammu Mail, Punjab Express, INDP NDLS Express, UP Sampark Kranti Express, Sainik Express, Jammu Rajdhani Express, and Hirakund Express, all running behind schedule as of 6 AM.
The heavy fog in the region is attributed to both adverse weather conditions and high levels of air pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi deteriorated to ‘severe plus’ levels, with a reading of 487 recorded by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at 11 AM. Air quality readings from various parts of the city included Ashok Vihar at 495, Mundka at 495, Patparganj at 494, and Anand Vihar at 492, among others.
In response to the worsening air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) implemented Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) starting today. The decision follows a sharp rise in Delhi’s AQI, which reached 441 by 4 PM on Sunday and climbed to 457 by 7 PM. This prompted an emergency meeting of the GRAP Sub-Committee, which outlined a set of urgent measures to tackle the pollution crisis.
Key measures under Stage 4 of GRAP include a ban on the entry of trucks into Delhi, except those carrying essential goods or providing essential services. Only LNG/CNG/electric trucks and BS-VI diesel trucks will be allowed entry. Additionally, Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) registered outside Delhi, unless they are electric, CNG, or BS-VI diesel, will also face restrictions. The operation of diesel-operated medium and heavy goods vehicles (BS-IV and below) registered in Delhi will be prohibited, unless they are involved in essential services.
The ban on construction and demolition activities has also been extended to include public infrastructure projects like highways, roads, flyovers, and power transmission lines.
