The Election Commission of India (ECI) has stepped in to ensure fair bypolls in Uttar Pradesh after a controversy erupted over the checking of voters’ identities. The issue came to light following complaints by the Samajwadi Party (SP), which alleged that police officers were unlawfully checking voter IDs and Aadhaar cards.
In response, the ECI has suspended at least seven police personnel for violating voter guidelines. The suspended officers include:
– Two from Kanpur district
– Two from Muzaffarnagar district
– Three from Moradabad district
The ECI issued a statement emphasizing that no eligible voter should be prevented from voting and that any biased or unlawful conduct during voting would not be tolerated. The commission promised immediate investigations into complaints, with strict action to follow if anyone is found guilty.
Bypolls are currently being held in nine assembly seats across Uttar Pradesh, including Ghaziabad, Katehari, Khair, Kundarki, Karhal, Majhawan, Meerapur, Phulpur, and Sisamau.
The controversy escalated after SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused police of interfering with the voting process, particularly in certain communities, and urged the ECI to act on the complaints. The situation has sparked widespread attention as the ECI continues to monitor the situation and ensure a fair election process.
