Thousands of farmers have started their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march towards the Parliament complex today, causing severe traffic jams at the Delhi-Noida borders. The farmers, primarily from Uttar Pradesh, are protesting to demand compensation and benefits under the new agricultural laws. They are pressing for five key demands, including fair compensation for land acquisition and improved benefits.

The protest coincides with the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, prompting authorities to ramp up security measures across Delhi-NCR. The police have installed barricades, conducted vehicle checks, and diverted traffic to manage the situation.

This march is part of a larger movement led by several farmer organisations, including the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM-non-political). These groups have announced that they will begin their own march to Delhi on December 6. On the same day, farmer unions in Kerala, Uttarakhand, and Tamil Nadu will hold symbolic marches to their respective legislative assemblies.

The protesting farmers are demanding a 10% allocation of plots and a 64.7% hike in compensation under the previous land acquisition law, equating to four times the market rate. They are also asking for 20% of plots for land acquired after January 1, 2014. Additional demands include employment and rehabilitation benefits for the children of landless farmers, the implementation of directives from the High Power Committee, and proper arrangements for resettling inhabited areas.

In response to the protests, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has urged the farmers to resolve their issues through dialogue.
