Today marks the fifth day of the 25th edition of the Hornbill Festival, held annually from December 1 to 10 at Kisama Heritage Village in Kohima, Nagaland. Known as the “Festival of Festivals,” this vibrant event celebrates the rich culture and traditions of the diverse tribes of Nagaland.
On the fifth day of the festival, various tribal groups showcased their cultural heritage through captivating folk songs and traditional dances. Tourists from across India and abroad have gathered to witness the festivities and experience Nagaland’s unique traditions.
One of the most spectacular events was the ‘Stone Pulling Ceremony,’ a traditional display of strength, unity, and cultural pride by the Angami Naga tribe. Around 1,500 members of the tribe, dressed in colorful traditional attire, pulled a massive 15-tonne stone over a distance of approximately four kilometers along winding roads. The stone, measuring 24 feet long and 6 feet wide, was hauled using ropes, with the participating men singing traditional tunes and firing celebratory gunshots. Women, also dressed in vibrant costumes, accompanied the procession, carrying food and water in bamboo baskets to support the effort.
This remarkable ceremony, held on the fourth day of the festival, captivated both locals and tourists alike, offering a unique insight into the cultural traditions of the Angami Naga community. The Hornbill Festival, which takes place at the Naga Heritage Village Kisama, located about 12 kilometers from Kohima, continues to draw large crowds eager to experience the spirit of Nagaland’s diverse tribes.
