India has stepped up surveillance along its border with Bangladesh following reports of Turkish-made drones being deployed by Dhaka near the West Bengal region.
Sources revealed that the Bangladesh Army has stationed Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. The drones are operated by Bangladesh’s 67th Army and have raised security concerns in India, particularly given the sensitive nature of the border region.
The deployment of the Bayraktar TB2 drones, which were acquired by Bangladesh earlier this year, is being closely monitored by Indian intelligence agencies. While Bangladesh claims the drones are for defensive purposes, India remains wary of the strategic implications. The Bayraktar TB2 drones are capable of surveillance and light strike operations, and six of the 12 drones ordered by Bangladesh have already been operationalized.
Intel reports have also suggested that extremist groups, previously suppressed during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, are regaining strength in areas close to the Indian border. These groups, along with smuggling networks, are believed to be exploiting the political instability in Bangladesh to infiltrate into India.
In response to the situation, India’s armed forces are on high alert. They are closely monitoring the new drone deployments and are prepared to deploy their own advanced surveillance drones, such as the Heron TP, to enhance counter-drone operations in the region.
