In light of the deteriorating situation in Syria, the Government of India has issued a late-night advisory urging all Indian nationals to completely “avoid all travel to Syria until further notice.” The advisory comes in the wake of escalating violence in the country, with insurgent groups intensifying their offensive.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has shared an emergency helpline number (+963 993385973) for the Indian Embassy in Damascus, which can also be reached via WhatsApp. Additionally, the MEA has provided an emergency email ID: hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in for any immediate assistance.

The Ministry stressed that those currently in Syria should stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus and remain updated on the situation. The advisory also urged Indians who can safely do so to “leave Syria at the earliest available commercial flights,” while advising others to exercise extreme caution, limit movements, and prioritize their safety.
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, there are around 90 Indian nationals in Syria, including 14 working with various UN organizations. The advisory was issued amidst a major offensive by insurgents led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has seized several key cities, including Aleppo, the largest city in Syria.
This new phase in the nearly 14-year-long Syrian civil war has shifted the balance, with insurgents reportedly pushing toward Homs and aiming for Damascus, the stronghold of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
The MEA continues to monitor the situation closely, urging all Indian nationals in Syria to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions. Updates will be shared once the embassy is contacted for further details.
