December 13, 2024 – Today, India observes the 23rd anniversary of the tragic attack on its Parliament, a day that serves as a stark reminder of the resilience and sacrifices made by the country’s security forces. On this day in 2001, five armed terrorists stormed the Parliament building in New Delhi, resulting in the deaths of six Delhi Police personnel, two Parliament Security Service members, and a gardener. The five assailants were gunned down by security forces in the forecourt of the Parliament.
Jagdish, Matbar, Kamlesh Kumari, Nanak Chand, and Rampal, Assistant Sub-Inspectors with the Delhi Police; Om Prakash, Bijender Singh, and Ghanshyam, Head Constables in the Delhi Police; and Deshraj, a gardener with the CPWD, all made the ultimate sacrifice while bravely defending the Parliament during the terrorist attack.
The attack, which shocked the nation, was later attributed to Pakistan-based terrorist groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The incident significantly heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, culminating in the 2001–2002 India-Pakistan standoff, during which military forces faced off along the Line of Control.
The Impact: Heightened Security Measures
The aftermath of the attack saw India taking significant steps to bolster security around the Parliament. The loss of eight security personnel led to a series of new protocols, including the installation of wedge barricades on all major roads leading to the Parliament, the introduction of RF tags on cars, and photo identity passes for visitors.
One of the most notable improvements was the installation of CCTV cameras throughout the Parliament complex, along with crowd control barricades in key corridors. In recent years, additional security measures have been implemented, including handheld explosive vapor detectors at all Parliament gates, electric fencing around the outer perimeter, and CRPF watchtowers along Red Cross Road and Raisina Road.
A sniffer dog squad has also been introduced, providing an added layer of security to safeguard one of the country’s most significant institutions.
A Day to Reflect and Remember
As India reflects on the tragic events of December 13, 2001, it continues to honor the courage and sacrifices of those who stood in defense of the nation’s democracy. The 23rd anniversary serves as a reminder of the constant vigilance required to protect the nation and its people from threats, both foreign and domestic.
