The cold in Kashmir Valley intensified as Srinagar, the summer capital, experienced its coldest night of the season so far. On Friday, the temperature dropped to minus 6.2°C, setting a new low for this winter, according to MET Department officials.
Other areas also saw frigid temperatures: Gulmarg recorded minus 6°C, while Pahalgam dipped to minus 8.2°C. Despite no rainfall, slippery road conditions kept residents indoors in the morning, with vehicular traffic staying off the roads. Commuters waited for the temperature to rise before heading out for their daily routines.
Frozen water taps became a common sight as locals lit small fires around pipes to thaw them. Most water bodies, including lakes and rivers, began to freeze with the onset of Chillai Kalan, Kashmir’s harshest winter period. The sky remained mostly overcast, limiting the chances of clear skies.
During this extreme cold, it’s almost impossible to find anyone in the Valley without a Pheran, the traditional loose tweed garment worn to keep warm in the winter months.
