A fresh wave of controversy has emerged at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following the installation of a statue depicting a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered in August. The statue, named ‘Cry of the Hour’, has drawn sharp criticism on social media for being “disrespectful” and “disturbing.”
The artwork, created by artist Asit Sain, is positioned near building that houses the office of RG Kar’s principal. It portrays the victim’s agony in her final moments, with a bust showing a woman in distress. While the intent behind the installation is to symbolize the victim’s pain and to raise awareness of the tragedy, many people have expressed discomfort over the depiction, calling it insensitive and inappropriate.
The controversy comes amidst ongoing protests by junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College, who have been on a ceasework since Tuesday. They are demanding the West Bengal government fulfill promises made after the traumatic incident, including enhanced security measures in hospitals. The doctors are also seeking justice for their late colleague, who was assaulted and killed on August 9.
Although the medical staff had partially resumed work after a 42-day strike, they returned to protest, citing the government’s failure to implement key demands. These include the installation of CCTV cameras, 24/7 security for healthcare workers, and stronger protocols to prevent future acts of violence against medical professionals.
The Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, which is leading the protests, has been vocal about the need for urgent reforms to ensure the safety of medical staff in the state.
