Paris Olympics medallist Manu Bhaker’s name has been left out of the nominees for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honour. A 12-member National Sports Day committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice V. Ramasubramaniam, did not recommend the shooter’s name for the prestigious award.
While the Sports Ministry claimed that Bhaker did not apply for the award, her father, Ramakrishna, stated that they had indeed submitted an application but had received no response from the committee.
Manu Bhaker, who won the Arjuna Award in 2020, played a key role in India’s performance at the Paris Olympics, where the nation won six medals, just one short of the record set at the London 2012 Games. Bhaker clinched two bronze medals — one in the women’s 10m air pistol event and another in the mixed 10m pistol event alongside Sarabjot Singh.
Known for her resilience after being blamed for India’s performance in the Tokyo Olympics, Bhaker made a remarkable comeback in Paris. Recently, she also hit back at critics who mocked her for wearing her Olympic medals at every promotional event following her success.
