In a major security breakthrough, Meghalaya Police on Wednesday apprehended 17 Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, in the West Garo Hills district. The imfiltrators were arrested from a vehicle with the registration number AS01QC0575 near Hallidayganj Singimari, close to Hatshingmari, while en route to Guwahati from Mankachar in Assam.
According to police sources, the group had entered India illegally with the assistance of middlemen and was heading towards southern states, including Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, in search of work. The arrested individuals are believed to have crossed the border from Bangladesh, taking advantage of porous areas to enter the country undetected.
The vehicle they were travelling in was intercepted during a routine check by the Meghalaya Police, who have since initiated an investigation into the case. Authorities are working to ascertain the full extent of the infiltration and to track down the individuals responsible for aiding their illegal movement.
This arrest highlights growing concerns over illegal immigration and cross-border movement in the region, prompting calls for heightened vigilance and stricter enforcement along sensitive border areas.
