The recently released 68th edition of the annual report of National Crime Records Bureau, ‘Crime in India 2020’ shows a grim state of crimes in India despite the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown with 1.2 lakh cases of deaths recorded due to sheer negligence relating to road accidents, with an average of 328 persons losing their lives everyday.
According to the report 1.35 lakh cases of ‘hit and run’ has been logged in the country since 2018. 41,196 ‘hit and run’ cases reported in 2020, 47,504 cases in 2019 and 47,028 cases registered in 2018, as many as 3.92 lakh lives have been lost in the past three years with 112 cases of ‘hit and run’ on an average reported every day across the country.
The case of deaths recorded due to negligence related to rail accidents were 52 in 2020 as compared to 55 cases in 2019 and 35 cases in 2018. Also 133 cases of death due to medical negligence were logged in 2020 and around 6,367 cases of deaths were registered due to other negligence.
Subsequently a dip in the cases of crimes against women, children and senior citizens, theft, robbery, dacoit, burglary have been registered owing to the lockdown, which didn’t fare well for the state of Assam with Assam recording the highest rate of crime against women in the country for the fourth consecutive year since 2017. The rate of crime against women in Assam was reported to be 154.3 which is way higher than the national rate of 56.4 followed by Odisha at 112.9 and Delhi at 106.4
A surge in the crimes against Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes has been reported with 9.4% increase against Scheduled castes and 9.3% increase against the Scheduled tribes. On the brighter side a decline in the crimes against children and senior citizens has been reported with a decrease of 13.2% against children and 10.8% against senior citizens.
With a total of 66, 01,285 cognizable crimes recorded on 2020 that include 42, 54,356 IPC crimes and 23, 46,929 SLL crimes, an increase of 28% has been reported in the registration of cases as compared to the previous year. While Delhi recorded the highest number of cognizable offences with a crime rate of 1506.9 per one lakh population followed by Chennai at 1,016.4, Kolkata has been considered the safest city by the NCRB report with the crime rate recorded at the lowest of 109.9 in cognizable offences.
