The recent clarification by the GST Council regarding popcorn taxation has led to an outburst of memes online, with users humorously diving into the intricacies of the tax rates on different types of popcorn.
At its 55th meeting on Saturday, the GST Council confirmed that there would be no changes to the existing tax rates. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman explained that the taxation on caramelised popcorn, which contains added sugar, differs from that on salted and plain popcorn, as it falls under the classification of sugar confectionery.
The GST Council has outlined the tax rates for various types of popcorn. Unpacked and unlabelled salted popcorn is taxed at 5% GST, while pre-packed and labelled ready-to-eat popcorn carries a 12% GST rate. Caramelised popcorn, due to its added sugar content, is taxed at a higher rate of 18% GST.
The Council emphasized that the different preparation methods and characteristics of each popcorn variant determine the applicable GST rate. To make things clearer, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) will soon release a detailed circular to further explain the tax structure.
In the meantime, social media is flooded with memes poking fun at the complex tax system, with users dissecting the minutiae of each popcorn variety’s tax rate.
