A recent petition has sparked controversy, with claims that the revered Ajmer Sharif Dargah, dedicated to Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, is actually a Hindu Shiva temple. The petition was filed by Vishnu Gupta, leader of the right-wing Hindu group Hindu Sena.
In response to the petition, a lower court in Ajmer issued notices to three major entities: the Ajmer Dargah Committee, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The court, presided over by Civil Judge Manmohan Chandel, is seeking responses to the claims regarding the historical and religious significance of the site.
Gupta, in his petition, is demanding that the Ajmer Sharif Dargah be officially recognized as the “Sankat Mochan Mahadev Temple.” He has also called for an ASI-led survey to investigate the site’s true origins. Additionally, Gupta seeks the cancellation of all official registrations associated with the dargah and the restoration of Hindu worship rights at the site.
This legal move comes on the heels of a court-mandated survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, which has led to significant unrest. Protests erupted over claims about the mosque’s history, resulting in violent clashes and the tragic deaths of five Muslims, including a minor, allegedly due to police firing.
As the case progresses, it continues to fuel debates over the religious and historical identity of significant religious sites in India.
