A dramatic and alarming incident occurred this morning at Amritsar’s Golden Temple when a man attempted to assassinate Sukhbir Singh Badal, chief of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, while he was performing penance at the temple.
The accused, identified as Narain Singh from Gurdaspur, approached Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple, where Badal was seated as part of his penance. Badal, who has been carrying out his punishment for the past two days, was in a wheelchair due to a fractured leg. Dressed in a blue sewadar uniform and holding a spear, he has been overseeing temple entry for one hour each day as part of his religious service.
As the shooter pulled out a gun and aimed at Badal, a nearby man intervened, grabbing the attacker’s hand and preventing him from taking a clear shot. The bullet missed Badal and the people around him. The assailant was quickly overpowered by bystanders and arrested by authorities.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police are currently investigating the incident. The event has raised serious concerns about law and order in Punjab, given the high-profile nature of the target and the location of the attack.
