The space no longer is the territory for the seasoned astronauts, with the SpaceX Inspiration crew making a splash down with the four first-ever civilian crew at about 7:07 pm Sunday EST (4:37 am Monday IST) in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida after staying in the orbit for 3 days. The crew had lifted off at 8:02 pm EST September 15th from the Kennedy Space Centre, Cape Canaveral, Florida atop a Falcon 9 rocket.
The all private team included tech billionaire Jared Issacman, 38 who served as the mission commander as well as the benefactor of the mission who’s primary mission was to raise awareness and funds for St. Jude’s children’s research hospital in Tennessee.
Hayley Arceneaux, 29 ,a cancer survivor and a physician assistant at STM Jude’s children’s research hospital who served as the mission’s medical officer and has become the youngest person to reach the earth’s orbit.
Dr. Sian Proctor, 51, the fourth black female astronaut and geoscientist and Chris Sembroski, 42 , aerospace data engineer and air force veteran were also the ones chosen for the mission on board the Crew Dragon’s Capsule Resilience.
This successful debut flight of Elon Musk’s space tourism business has left its competitors seething in the mouth of defeat as within just three minutes it blasted past the Karman line, the internationally agreed upon edge of space and it took another three hours for the crew capsule to reach an orbital altitude of 363 miles higher than the International Space Station and the farthest any human has traveled in space after NASA’s Apollo moon program in 1972.
With Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin CEO Jeff Bezos spending only a couple of minutes in their respective ventures of space exploration, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon has created a historic moment and achieved a milestone opening up new avenues for space exploration and making private space travel plausible for the space enthusiasts willing to spend a fortune for once in a lifetime and a dream come true kind of an experience.
To give an in depth and accurate details of the mission from lift off to landing, Netflix is coming up with a docuseries , ‘Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space Live Launch, a part of which has been livestreamed on Sept. 15, with the final episode airing on Sept 30.
