The Supreme Court of India has unveiled a new statue of Lady Justice that marks a significant shift from traditional depictions. This striking statue has removed the blindfold, replacing the sword with the Constitution in one hand. This change symbolizes that the law in India is neither blind nor punitive, reinforcing the idea that justice is accessible to all.
Commissioned by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the statue features Lady Justice with her eyes open, sending a powerful message that the law is informed and vigilant. Traditionally, Lady Justice has been depicted with a blindfold, symbolizing equality before the law and the idea that justice should be delivered without bias towards wealth, power, or status. The scales, representing balance and fairness, were complemented by the sword, signifying the authority of the law.
The new statue aims to move away from colonial legacies while emphasizing a modern understanding of justice in India. It now proudly stands in the judges’ library at the Supreme Court.
Justice Chandrachud firmly believes that the law is not blind and that everyone deserves equal treatment. While the blindfold has been removed, the scales remain, underscoring the court’s commitment to weighing both sides of an argument before reaching a judgment. This new representation of Lady Justice encapsulates a progressive vision for the Indian legal system.
