In a dramatic show of protest against the DMK government, Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai whipped himself outside his residence on Friday. The protest was in response to the recent sexual assault incident involving a female student at Anna University in Chennai.
Annamalai, who had announced the protest a day earlier, completed six whips before a person rushed to stop him from continuing. The BJP leader explained that his self-whipping was a symbolic act against the “continuous injustice” under the DMK-led state government.
At a press conference on Thursday, Annamalai revealed his plan to refrain from wearing sandals until the DMK is removed from power and vowed to go on a 48-day fast. This marked his ongoing fight against what he described as the government’s poor handling of law and order.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan and several party workers were detained by Tamil Nadu police on Thursday during protests against the assault. Soundararajan, who led the BJP’s protest, accused the DMK government of trying to suppress dissent, claiming that police actions were an attempt to silence their voices.
The sexual assault incident occurred on Monday night when a second-year student from Anna University was allegedly assaulted by a man on campus. Authorities have arrested one person in connection with the case.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with opposition parties criticizing the DMK government for its handling of the situation. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan called for swift action, while actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party head Vijay expressed shock and urged the government to take immediate legal action.
The protests highlight growing tensions over law and order issues in Tamil Nadu, as political parties demand accountability from the state government.
