In a move that escalates the ongoing language dispute with the central government, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s government has chosen to drop the official rupee symbol in the 2025-26 state budget. Instead, the state prominently featured the Tamil letter ‘ru,’ derived from rubai (rupees in Tamil), replacing the official symbol, which is based on the Hindi alphabet for ‘R.’
The budget’s logo, which was shared alongside hashtags like #DravidianModel and #TNBudget2025, notably lacked the national currency symbol, marking this as the first time a state has decided to reject the official rupee symbol.
This decision comes amid Tamil Nadu’s strong opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) and the three-language formula proposed by the central government. However, DMK spokesperson A Saravanan emphasized that the state was not rejecting the official rupee symbol but was instead promoting the use of Tamil, highlighting the significance of the letter ‘ru’ as part of the language’s heritage.
Tamil Nadu’s decision has sparked a fresh debate on language politics and the use of regional languages in official contexts, making this move a significant step in the ongoing language row between the state and the central government.
