In a significant move, the United States announced on Tuesday that it would resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. This decision follows productive talks where Kyiv agreed to support a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in its ongoing conflict with Russia. The two nations issued a joint statement confirming the agreement.
After over eight hours of discussions in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. would now present the ceasefire offer to Russia, leaving the decision squarely in Moscow’s hands.
“The President wanted this war to end yesterday,” Rubio told reporters, referring to U.S. President Donald Trump. “Our hope is that the Russians will answer ‘yes’ quickly, so we can move to the second phase of this, which is real negotiations.”
The war in Ukraine began with Russia’s full-scale invasion three years ago. Currently, Russia controls about a fifth of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. Rubio emphasized that the U.S. is eager to reach a comprehensive agreement with both Russia and Ukraine “as soon as possible.”
The next steps now depend on Russia’s response, with hopes for a swift transition to peace talks.
