Uma Chetry, the first woman cricketer from Assam to play for India’s senior team, has achieved a major milestone by being added to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Annual Player Contracts for 2024-25. This recognition places Chetry in Group C, marking her growing prominence in Indian cricket and highlighting the rising influence of the sport in India’s northeastern region.
The BCCI announced the new contracts, which will be effective from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. Chetry will be joining an elite group of talented cricketers in Group C, including names like Yastika Bhatia, Radha Yadav, Shreyanka Patil, Titas Sadhu, Arundathi Reddy, Amanjot Kaur, Sneh Rana, and Pooja Vastrakar.
Born on July 27, 2002, in Kandulimari village, Golaghat district, Assam, Chetry’s journey into cricket began in her childhood. She honed her skills by playing cricket with her brother and neighborhood boys. Her mother played a crucial role in encouraging her passion for the game, providing the support that helped her pursue cricket against all odds.
Chetry made her breakthrough in June 2023 when she represented India A in the ACC Women’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup. But it was on July 7, 2024, when she made her international debut in a T20I match against South Africa, marking the beginning of her journey with the senior national team.
Chetry’s inclusion in the national team and her new contract with BCCI are not just personal achievements, but also a powerful source of inspiration for aspiring cricketers, especially those from the northeast. Her success showcases that with talent, hard work, and determination, young athletes can overcome challenges and make their mark at the national level.
This achievement highlights the immense potential of sportspersons from India’s northeastern states and serves as a reminder that with the right opportunities, the sky is the limit.
