A United Airlines flight from Lagos, Nigeria, to Washington Dulles International Airport experienced a sudden in-flight jolt on Friday, injuring four passengers and two crewmembers. The unsettling event was captured by passengers in a video that shows trays, food, and other items scattered across the cabin floor.
Flight 613, a Boeing 787, was forced to make an emergency landing back in Lagos after the sudden movement. All six individuals who were injured were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but fortunately, they have since been released and are reported to be in stable condition.
United Airlines has stated that the cause of the jolt is not related to severe turbulence. The airline is working with aviation authorities in both the US and Nigeria to investigate the incident and determine the cause. Although it remains unclear what caused the unexpected movement, flight data from FlightRadar24 reveals that Flight 613 descended abruptly from its cruising altitude about 93 minutes after takeoff.
Interestingly, FlightRadar data shows that the same aircraft had been diverted just days earlier, on Tuesday, during a previous leg from Lagos to Washington. On that flight, the plane also experienced a rapid descent of 1,000 feet around 89 minutes into the journey. It’s not yet known if the two incidents are related.
Flight 613 was carrying 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots at the time of the emergency landing. United Airlines is currently working to accommodate affected passengers on other flights.
The Boeing 787 involved in the incident is under review by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This comes just months after a similar incident in March involving a Latam Airlines flight, where an unexpected mid-air dive was caused by a pilot’s seat unexpectedly moving into the control column. Following that event, Boeing issued a safety advisory to airlines, urging them to inspect cockpit seat switches on all Boeing 787 aircraft.
As investigations continue, aviation authorities are focusing on understanding the cause of these jolts and ensuring the safety of passengers and crew on future flights.
