In Basti, Uttar Pradesh, a 17-year-old Dalit boy committed suicide after allegedly being subjected to a string of horrifying acts of violence and humiliation, including being assaulted, stripped, and urinated upon during a birthday celebration.
According to the family members of the deceased teen, he was invited to a birthday party by a local on the night of December 20.
During the celebrations, he was stripped, assaulted, and urinated on by four people who apparently recorded the incident on their phones.
The boy returned home late that night and shared the incident with his family the next morning. Traumatised by the violence and humiliation, he took up the drastic step.
The victim’s family alleged that they had tried to file a complaint immediately after learning about the incident but were unable to do so. The boy’s uncle, Vijay Kumar, stated that they had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint, but the police had refused to register it.
After Aditya’s death, the family took his body to the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Basti and held a sit-in protest. It was only after hours of agitation that a case was finally registered. The victim’s mother accused the police of attempting to shield the accused, claiming corruption and negligence on their part.
Meanwhile, Basti’s Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, confirmed that a case had been registered under the relevant sections based on the family’s complaint. The police are also investigating whether the assault was driven by personal animosity or any other motive.
