The United States is hopeful that Ukraine will support agreements made in a recent phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, as ceasefire talks are set to commence in Jeddah on Sunday. This update comes from Trump’s Special Envoy, Steven Witkoff, as reported by TASS Russian News Agency.
In an interview with Fox News, Witkoff shared details of his discussions with Putin, revealing that he had two lengthy meetings with the Russian leader. “The first meeting lasted nearly three and a half hours, and the second one was close to four hours,” Witkoff said. “Both were compelling, and we made significant progress.”
Witkoff noted that the second meeting made substantial headway, especially on two key issues: a ceasefire related to energy infrastructure and a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea. “From the Russian side, we were able to narrow down the issues, and both sides are now in agreement on the ceasefire regarding energy infrastructure,” he explained. “We’ve also agreed on the Black Sea maritime aspect, which is another important piece of the ceasefire.”
While progress has been made, Witkoff emphasized that there are still unresolved details that will need to be worked out in the upcoming Jeddah talks. “There are still some details to iron out, but we expect discussions to move forward on Sunday,” he said. “The goal is to achieve a full ceasefire, and we’re optimistic that we’re heading in the right direction.”
The US delegation to Jeddah will be led by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Witkoff expressed confidence that the obstacles hindering progress have been overcome, particularly regarding the ceasefire for energy infrastructure and the Black Sea moratorium on firing.
“We’re very close to a full ceasefire now,” Witkoff stated. “Just recently, there was no consensus on these two aspects, but now we’ve reached an agreement. I think the final step is within reach.”
Witkoff also praised President Putin for his stance, stating, “President Putin agreed with the approach and expressed a desire to stop more casualties. He doesn’t want to see more people dying in the field.”
With negotiations set to begin on Sunday, all eyes will be on the Jeddah talks as efforts continue to move toward a lasting ceasefire.
