Violence erupted in Parbhani, Maharashtra, on Wednesday following an incident involving the tearing of a replica of the Constitution at the Ambedkar Memorial. Protesters took to the streets, demanding justice, raising slogans, blocking the Parbhani-Nanded highway, and burning tyres. The situation quickly escalated as rioters pelted stones, set vehicles on fire, and vandalized shops. Several police officers were injured, and significant damage was caused to vehicles and properties. In response, riot control police and the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) were deployed, with authorities using tear gas and carrying out lathi charges to disperse the crowds. The unrest was triggered by an incident on Tuesday when Sopan Dattarao Pawar (45) allegedly attempted to break the Constitution replica, leading to violent retaliation from the locals, including a severe beating of Pawar, who has since been arrested. Rioters caused widespread damage, setting vehicles ablaze on Basmat Road and Khanapur Phata, and attacking shops in areas like Station Road, Gandhi Park, and Shivaji Chowk. They also destroyed CCTV cameras by throwing stones and sticks. A bandh was called in the city today, further heightening tensions and prompting a large police presence as authorities continue to manage the aftermath of the violence.
The police have arrested one individual in connection with the violence, and investigations are ongoing. The situation remains under control, but authorities are monitoring the area closely to prevent further outbreaks of violence.
This incident highlights the deep-seated tensions in the region, with protesters demanding severe action against those who insult symbols of the Constitution.
