Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s attempt to visit the violence-affected Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh sparked hours of high drama when they were stopped at the Ghazipur border between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh by the police.
The confrontation began around 11 am when the police blocked the highway with barricades, halting the Congress convoy. Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders got out of their vehicle and engaged in discussions with senior police officers, but they were denied permission to proceed further into the district.
The situation quickly escalated into chaos, with massive traffic jams and congestion forming as Congress workers attempted to breach the barricades. The political standoff gained momentum as the protestors chanted slogans, adding to the tension.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, condemned the move, accusing the BJP of using the police to “suppress the message of truth and brotherhood,” describing it as a constitutional violation.
Authorities in Sambhal had earlier requested neighboring districts to intercept the Congress leaders before they entered the district. The District Magistrate wrote to officials in Bulandshahr, Amroha, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar, instructing them to monitor Rahul Gandhi’s movements and prevent his entry into Sambhal.
Sambhal has been at the center of controversy since November 19, when a Mughal-era mosque was surveyed following claims that a Harihar temple once stood at the same site, sparking tensions in the area.
