Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi has once again grabbed attention with her choice of accessory in Parliament. Just a day after showing solidarity with Palestine, she carried a handbag with the message “Bangladesh ke Hindu aur Isaiyon ke saath khade ho” (Stand with the Hindus and Christians of Bangladesh).
Along with several Congress MPs, Priyanka Gandhi staged a protest in the Parliament premises, demanding justice for Hindus and Christians facing atrocities in Bangladesh. The MPs held handbags with the message “Stand with minorities of Bangladesh” written on them, raising slogans calling on the government to ensure justice for the country’s minorities.
This intervention follows another stormy episode in Parliament where Priyanka Gandhi’s previous handbag, featuring the word “Palestine” and a watermelon symbol — a widely recognized symbol of solidarity with Palestinians — triggered a political debate. BJP leaders sharply criticized her for this, accusing her of “communal posturing” after Palestinian Embassy representative Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer visited her residence.
The BJP seized on the issue, framing it as an attempt to prioritize international concerns over domestic matters. Priyanka Gandhi dismissed the BJP’s criticism, defending her stance.
India has long supported a two-state solution, advocating for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. Additionally, India maintains strong historical and strategic ties with Bangladesh, though recent reports of attacks on minorities have raised concerns.
