Indian cricket team spinner R. Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket following the third Test match against Australia in Brisbane on Wednesday. The announcement came during the post-match press conference, where Ashwin was joined by skipper Rohit Sharma after the game ended in a draw.
Ashwin, who played in the second match of the five-Test series in Adelaide, was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja for the Brisbane Test. With 537 wickets in 106 Tests, Ashwin retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format, just behind Anil Kumble, who holds the record with 619 wickets.
While stepping down from international cricket, Ashwin will continue his career in T20 tournaments. He is set to represent Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, continuing his legacy in the domestic circuit.
At 38, Ashwin’s contribution to Indian cricket is immeasurable. He played a pivotal role in India’s rise to the top and their dominance in Test cricket from 2014 to 2019. His performances, especially in home conditions, were exceptional, and he was known not only for his bowling but also for his impactful contributions with the bat.
Ashwin’s retirement marks the end of an era in Indian cricket. His departure leaves behind a massive legacy and sets high expectations for the next generation of spinners, who will now look to fill the enormous shoes he leaves behind.
