On Monday, a Bengaluru NIA Special Court sentenced Bangladeshi national Jahidul Islam, also known as Kausar, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for his involvement in promoting the activities of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh India (JMB – India). Jahidul was also fined ₹57,000 in connection with offenses related to dacoity, conspiracy, fundraising, and ammunition procurement.
This marks the conviction of 11 accused in a series of cases tied to JMB’s operations in India.
The case first came to light in June 2019 when the Bengaluru City Police registered a case, following investigations by the NIA’s Kolkata Branch into the Burdwan blast case. The NIA took over the investigation, eventually uncovering links to several dacoity cases.
According to the NIA’s probe, Jahidul, the JMB Amir of India, and his associate, the absconding JMB leader Salauddin Salehin, crossed into India illegally in 2014. They had escaped custody in Bangladesh, where they were involved in the 2005 serial bombings. While hiding in India, Jahidul and his associates played key roles in the October 2014 Burdwan blast and the January 2018 blast in Bodhgaya.
NIA investigations revealed that Jahidul and his network conspired to fund JMB’s operations through dacoity. In 2018, they committed four robberies in Bengaluru, using the stolen funds to procure weapons, secure hideouts, and train for terrorist activities.
