In a significant move, District Education Officer (DEO) Nasir Hussain has directed all private schools in Bihar’s Kishanganj district, affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), to implement Urdu as part of their curriculum. The directive was issued on December 12, 2024, as part of efforts to promote the Urdu language in the district, which is home to a large minority population.
The DEO’s order requires that private schools in the region make necessary arrangements for teaching Urdu to willing students. Schools are also asked to submit a compliance report to the Bihar Education Project Office, ensuring they meet the requirements.
The decision follows concerns raised during the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting held in October 2024. Congress leaders, including MP Javed Azad and MLA Izharul Hussain, highlighted that private schools in the district were not offering Urdu as a subject, prompting the intervention.
Bihar BPSC Exam Protests and Police Action
In another development, protests erupted in Patna over the Bihar Public Service Commission’s (BPSC) 70th Integrated Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) 2024. Students have raised objections to the exam process, with some demanding its cancellation. In response, Bihar Education Minister Sunil Kumar confirmed that the BPSC would investigate the complaints and take appropriate action.
On December 13, 2024, Bihar police were forced to use lathi-charges and water cannons to disperse protesting students in Gandhi Maidan. The police have registered an FIR against 600-700 individuals, including Jan Suraaj Chief Prashant Kishor, accusing them of organizing unauthorized gatherings and instigating unrest.
The ongoing situation has sparked significant debate, with students and authorities at odds over the conduct of the examination process.
