AIIMS has launched a digital platform aimed at creating a unified referral and teleconsultation network that connects all AIIMS facilities and other Institutes of National Importance (INIs), such as JIPMER, Pondicherry, and PGIMER, Chandigarh. Developed in New Delhi, this software solution ensures smooth patient transfers between healthcare institutions.
During a press briefing, AIIMS Director Dr. M Srinivas announced the rollout of this platform, alongside a new patient grievance management portal designed to address complaints swiftly. Currently being tested in the mother and child block, the system will be expanded hospital-wide. The portal allows users to file complaints through QR codes or the website, with an automatic escalation process to resolve issues within a set timeframe. Additionally, a discharge feedback system is in place to assess medical care, nursing, dietary services, and sanitation.
Dr. Srinivas also explained the one-AIIMS referral policy, where patients can initially visit the nearest AIIMS facility. If resource limitations are identified, like at AIIMS Patna, teleconsultations or expedited referrals are arranged. This bidirectional referral system ensures that patients can also receive follow-up care at their local AIIMS center.
Addressing current operational challenges, Dr. Srinivas acknowledged extended waiting times and advised against visiting AIIMS for routine medical issues.
In terms of AI advancements, Dr. Srinivas announced AIIMS’s new status as a healthcare AI center of excellence, with the Government of India allocating Rs 300 crore to advance healthcare AI. This initiative will be a collaborative project with IIT Delhi, overseen by the Ministry of Education.
