In a historic move, the Odisha state government has announced a monthly pension of ₹20,000 and medical expense coverage for individuals who were imprisoned during the Emergency period of 1975-1977 and are still alive as of January 1, 2025.
The announcement, made on January 13 via a notification from the state’s Home Department, comes nearly five decades after the Emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The government has constituted state-level and district-level committees to select eligible beneficiaries for the scheme.
To avail of the benefits, affected individuals must submit an application in the prescribed format to the Collector and District Magistrate. The application should include supporting documents, the names of three prominent co-detainees, and an affidavit confirming their detention under the relevant act during the Emergency period.
The applications will undergo a thorough review process before the beneficiaries are confirmed. This initiative reflects the state government’s effort to honor the sacrifices made by those who suffered during a pivotal chapter in India’s history.
