Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India and a key figure in the nation’s economic reforms, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92 at AIIMS, New Delhi. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) confirmed the news late in the evening.
A Life of Service and Reform
Dr. Singh, known for his pivotal role in India’s economic transformation, served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. During his tenure, he led the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, focusing on economic reforms, inclusive growth, and India’s global integration. His leadership is credited with liberalizing the Indian economy, which helped the country emerge as a major global economic player.
Earlier this year, Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha after an impressive 33-year career in India’s upper house of Parliament. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics.
A Scholar and Economist
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh belonged to a family of Punjabi Sikh traders. He was raised by his paternal grandmother after the early death of his mother. His education began in Urdu medium schools, followed by studies in Peshawar and later in Amritsar. He went on to study at Panjab University and completed his Economics Tripos at the University of Cambridge in 1957.
Dr. Singh’s deep academic roots in economics laid the foundation for his later achievements in Indian politics. In 1991, under Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, Singh was appointed as Finance Minister, where he played a crucial role in the economic reforms that reshaped India.
A Legacy of Leadership
Dr. Singh’s political journey took him from being a finance minister to becoming India’s Prime Minister. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1991 and was re-elected multiple times throughout his career. Despite the challenges of his political career, including being the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004, Dr. Singh remained a respected and influential figure in Indian politics.
The Congress Party has announced the cancellation of all official programs, including its foundation day celebrations, for the next seven days to honor the late Prime Minister. His death has left a void in the political landscape, and tributes have poured in from across the country.
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of leaders, policymakers, and citizens committed to India’s progress.
