The ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), aimed at providing clean drinking water to rural households in Assam, is facing a serious setback. Contractors involved in the project have not received payments for their work, leading to widespread concerns that the initiative will grind to a halt within days.
Sources close to the project reveal that many contractors are on the brink of stopping work due to non-payment, with some already taking loans to continue their efforts. These contractors are demanding that the government pay them for the work completed so far, but recent reports suggest that the government is considering suspending the project at its current stage.
The sudden halt of the project has triggered frustration and anger among the contractors, many of whom are accusing the government of reneging on its commitments. There are also allegations that contractors were coerced or pressured into continuing work without guarantees of payment.
Adding fuel to the fire, the Central Government has been accused of not allocating sufficient funds for the project, putting contractors in a difficult financial situation. Several contractors have also raised concerns over what they describe as threatening behavior from officials, particularly MD Kailash Karthik, further intensifying tensions.
In response, the contractors’ associations have voiced strong protests, demanding immediate payments and a clear commitment to continue the project. Meanwhile, there have been reports that the Gauhati High Court has issued warnings to the government for not settling outstanding dues, emphasizing the legal obligations the government must uphold.
As the situation unfolds, there is growing uncertainty about the future of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Assam, with critics warning that the failure to resolve the issue promptly could lead to significant delays in providing essential water infrastructure to rural communities.
