In a significant legal development, a Canadian court has granted bail to four Indian nationals accused in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Khalistani terrorist. The accused—Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh—are facing serious charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The murder of Nijjar, who was a vocal pro-Khalistan leader, occurred in June 2023 in Surrey, British Columbia, and has attracted widespread international attention. The case gained further traction when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a bold claim, alleging that the Indian government might have been involved in Nijjar’s assassination. India, however, swiftly rejected these allegations, calling them “baseless.”
The legal proceedings have been complicated by delays in presenting evidence. The prosecution has faced challenges during preliminary hearings, with critics arguing that the lack of substantial evidence has weakened Canada’s stance in the case.
As of now, the trial has been transferred to the British Columbia Supreme Court, where the next hearing is scheduled for February 11, 2025.
The ongoing controversy surrounding Nijjar’s death has significantly strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada. The tensions escalated after Prime Minister Trudeau’s statements in Parliament, asserting the existence of “credible allegations” regarding India’s involvement in the assassination.
