Prime minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated TATA Aircraft Complex which is to be India’s first autonomous plant for manufacturing military aircraft along with his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez in Vadodara, Gujarat.
A total of 56 aircraft are under the C-295 programme, out of which 16 are being delivered directly by Airbus and the remaining 40 will be manufactured at the facility of Vadodara. The Ministry of Defence signed a Rs 21,935-crore contract with Airbus Defense and Space SA, Spain in 2021 for the supply of 56 aircraft. The C-295 is a transport aircraft of 5-10 tonne capacity with modern technology that will succeed the old technology of Indian Air Force’s Avro-748 planes. The C-295 is known to be a high-tech aircraft used for calculated transport of maximum 71 troops or 50 paratroopers and for logistic operations to locations that are too remote for current heavier aircraft.
The Vadodara facility will be responsible for manufacturing C295 aircraft at the TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) premises. It has been disclosed by PM Modi during the inauguration ceremony that the aircraft manufactured at the facility will soon be available to be exported. PM Modi declared that the partnership between Tata and Airbus an aircraft manufacturing company based in Spain, will foster the relationship between India and Spain. PM Modi also eulogised Ratan Tata who left for heaven abode earlier this month in his speech stating that he was the brain behind this project. Modi further added that wherever he is now he would be elated to know the success this project has been able to acquired.
Spanish PM Sanchez who is the first Spanish PM to visit India after 18 long years, proclaimed in his first visit to India that the first aircraft from Tata Advanced Systems Limited facility will be manufactured in the year 2026. He believes that this collaboration will strengthen the industrial ties between both the countries highlighting Spain’s commitment to India as a reliable and strategic partner. “This project brings together the best of two worlds. Tata is probably the best exponent of Indian industrial strength. Its products and services are present in virtually every country on the planet. Tata is a giant among giants,” Sanchez said.
PM Modi welcomed Spanish PM Sanchez with a Shobha Yatra, a type of roadshow in Vadodara, prior to the inauguration of the military aircraft plant. Following the inaugural ceremony, the two leaders will conduct a bilateral conversation at the Laxmi Vilas Palace.
Sanchez will also be travelling to Mumbai where he will communicate with trade and industry tycoons and personalities from the film industry.
At the ceremony, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran stated that the project was originally planned by Ratan Tata way back in 2012.
