A group of 101 farmers, known as a “Jathha,” resumed their march to Delhi on Saturday from the Shambhu border in Haryana. The farmers, part of a larger ongoing protest, faced resistance from Haryana police as they attempted to push forward. Their progress was halted for the day after some protesters were injured due to tear gas shelling by the police. Approximately 15 farmers were injured, with some requiring hospitalization.
This latest attempt marks the third time farmers have tried to march to Delhi. The previous attempts on December 6 and 8 were similarly thwarted, with Haryana police using tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds. A total of 22 farmers were injured in those earlier clashes.
In response to the renewed protest, the Haryana government imposed a digital lockdown early Saturday. Mobile internet and bulk SMS services were suspended in the Ambala district from 6 am until midnight on December 17, as tensions escalated. The restrictions were intended to prevent the spread of information and maintain control over the situation.
As the protest enters its 307th day, leaders of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), led by Sarwan Singh Pandher, reiterated their willingness to engage in talks with the central government. They continue to call for widespread national support for the farmers’ demands, urging the government to address their grievances.
The farmers’ march, fueled by ongoing frustrations and demands for agricultural reforms, has sparked both solidarity and confrontation, creating a tense atmosphere in Haryana as the protestors persist in their efforts to reach Delhi.
