Tabla legend Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73 in a hospital in San Francisco, the United States, his family confirmed on Monday. The renowned musician died from complications related to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis after being hospitalized for two weeks. His condition worsened, and he was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before his passing.
Zakir Hussain, widely regarded as the greatest tabla player of his generation, was a trailblazer in the world of Indian classical music. He was the son of the legendary tabla master, Ustad Alla Rakha. Born on March 9, 1951, Hussain began his musical journey at the age of seven and went on to become a global ambassador for the tabla. Over the course of his illustrious career, he collaborated with some of India’s most iconic musicians, including Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Shivkumar Sharma.
Hussain’s extraordinary contributions to music earned him numerous accolades. He won four Grammy Awards, including three at the 66th Grammy Awards ceremony earlier this year. He was also honored with the prestigious Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023, solidifying his legacy as one of India’s most celebrated classical musicians.
Zakir Hussain is survived by his wife, Antonia Minnecola, and their two daughters, Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi.
