In a notable development, a 10-month-old child in Assam has been confirmed to be the first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection this season. The child, who was admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh with cold-like symptoms, is currently stable and undergoing treatment.
Symptoms and Diagnosis The child was admitted to the state-run hospital four days ago with symptoms resembling a cold, such as cough, runny nose, and fever. Further tests conducted by the Lahowal-based ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre (ICMR-RMRC) confirmed the presence of HMPV.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that primarily causes mild cold-like symptoms. It is most common among young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Although the virus can affect people of all ages, cases typically peak from November to May, contributing to acute respiratory infections globally.
Since its identification in 2001, HMPV has been circulating in human populations, accounting for about 4-16% of acute respiratory infections worldwide. Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty, a senior scientist at ICMR-RMRC, noted that the virus is commonly found in Dibrugarh, with 110 cases reported in the district since 2014. This is the first case detected this season, but similar infections have been observed annually.
Public Health Assurance Despite its seasonal presence, health authorities have reassured the public that HMPV infections are typically manageable with proper medical care and treatment. While it can lead to mild respiratory illness, there is no cause for alarm, as the virus is generally not considered severe.
Officials continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to stay informed about the virus, while maintaining standard health precautions.
