Manmohan Singh Cremated with Full State Honours at Nigambodh Ghat
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was cremated with full state honours on Saturday at Nigambodh Ghat, located in Delhi’s Kashmere Gate. The ceremony was attended by his family, friends, colleagues, and government dignitaries.
The cremation rituals were conducted in accordance with Sikh customs, with Dr. Singh’s mortal remains placed on a pyre of sandalwood sticks at the VIP Ghat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Union Ministers and top BJP leaders including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and J.P. Nadda, paid their respects at the site. Earlier in the day, Congress leaders including President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, gathered at the Congress office to honor the former PM.
In addition to national leaders, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay was also present to pay tribute to Dr. Singh. The state funeral was attended by several prominent figures, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Government of India has declared a seven-day state mourning across the country, with the national flag flying at half-mast in honor of Dr. Singh. The Congress party has canceled all official programs, including its Foundation Day celebrations, until January 3, as a mark of respect.
Dr. Singh, who passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92 due to age-related health complications, served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Often called the ‘architect of India’s economic reforms,’ his leadership was pivotal in transforming India’s economic landscape.
The Centre also announced that space will be allocated for a memorial dedicated to Dr. Singh, once formalities are completed. In the meantime, the cremation ceremony proceeded with full state honours.
Condolences have poured in from global leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
