To combat the rising road fatalities across India, the Union Government has launched a new “Cashless Treatment” scheme to provide financial support to road accident victims. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that the initiative will offer treatment coverage of up to Rs 1.5 lakh for the first seven days of medical care. However, this assistance is contingent on the police being informed about the accident within 24 hours.
In addition to this, the government has introduced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who fall victim to hit-and-run accidents.
Expansion Plans: This initiative, which is currently in its pilot phase, has already benefited 6,840 individuals across states like Assam, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Puducherry, and Haryana. By March 2025, the scheme will be expanded nationwide to ensure that all road accident victims receive timely medical care without financial worries.
Tech Innovations for Road Safety: Nitin Gadkari also highlighted plans to introduce three new tech-based systems for new buses and trucks. These systems include an audio warning device to alert drivers if they are drowsy or falling asleep while driving.
With the cashless treatment initiative and tech-driven safety measures, the government aims to reduce road fatalities and improve emergency care for victims across India.
