Indian chess prodigy Gukesh D, at just 18 years old, has etched his name in history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. His remarkable victory against China’s Ding Liren in a thrilling Singapore final last week has not only brought him global recognition but has also established him as a trailblazer in Indian chess.
While Gukesh’s success has captured the admiration of the chess world, it also comes with a significant financial burden. The young champion now faces a hefty income tax liability of Rs 4.67 crore, a figure that surpasses the entire IPL salary of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend MS Dhoni for the upcoming season, which is Rs 4 crore.
Gukesh’s total earnings from the World Chess Championship are estimated at a staggering Rs 11.34 crore. This includes Rs 5.04 crore from his three match wins, with the remainder coming from the total prize pool of Rs 21 crore, as per FIDE regulations.
Though his victory has brought Gukesh international fame, the tax bill is a reminder of the financial complexities that come with such monumental success.
