Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been convicted in the high-profile £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case, marking a significant legal setback for the PTI founder. According to reports the Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, while Bushra Bibi has received a seven-year sentence.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the anti-corruption court, in a makeshift courtroom set up inside Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, where Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023. The judgment, which had been postponed three times, was finally announced on January 13, 2025.
The case was filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in December 2023, accusing Khan, his wife, and six others of embezzling £190 million (around 50 billion Pakistani Rupees). While others involved in the case, including a property tycoon, remain outside the country, Khan and Bushra Bibi face charges of misusing funds that were intended for the national treasury.
The funds in question had been returned to Pakistan by the UK’s National Crime Agency as part of a settlement with the property tycoon, who allegedly helped set up a university for Khan and Bibi. However, investigators claim the money was redirected for personal use, causing a significant loss to the Pakistani economy.
This conviction represents one of the largest financial wrongdoing cases in Imran Khan’s political career and is seen as a crucial moment in the ongoing legal and political battles surrounding the former prime minister.
